George Merusi III made his league debut last night and hit an impressive .667 against a tough Kirk Monbleau. New comer Paul Sramowicz, is on the Home Run board after only 3 games and made an exceptional diving play vs. the Nockers. Captain Matt Mullen missed week 2 but looked to be seeing the ball well on opening night. Although facing adversity the team seems to be meshing and becoming a unit. If only a starting pitcher could fall into the teams lap they may find themselves competing with the league’s best. While I never did get that Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, some prayers do get answered it would seem. Just prior to week 2 action, Golden Stick Veteran, Jason Murphy, threw his hat into free agency. With the waiver wire cleared and the Butter Tongues tied for worst record and way ahead (behind) in run differential, the Bay State had first looks at Murphy.
To no surprise GM Matt Mullen jumped on the opportunity and signed Murphy early on Wednesday the 15th. Murphy’s resume includes 7 years of competitive play, including but not limited to Golden Stick Wiffle Ball. In the GSWL Murphy competed in both fast and medium pitch leagues and saw most of his action from the mound. A shoulder injury sidelined Murphy briefly but he looks to be a dominate pitcher in the NEAWL. The addition of a seasoned and proven Wiffler should go a long way in lifting the BT’s spirits. As we have seen in the past a true #1 pitcher can make all the difference for a franchise and there is no reason to expect less in this case.
While there is now a light at the end of the tunnel, the BT’s still have to do some work to ensure a playoffs birth. Already three games behind the division leading Nockers, the Tongues face a competitive Nashoba Valley team next week in Murphy’s debut. While only a game behind of a playoff spot in the current standings, the Butter Tongues will find themselves chasing the Tribe all season if Mike King gets healthy. The Nockers and Weemen look to be two of the very best in the league let alone the division so if the Butter Tongues are able to sneak into the play offs it should be considered a win for the team. When Playoff Wiffs start all bets are off so if the Tongues do find themselves in post season competition don’t be too surprised if they make a run.
